I'm reading Thursday, March 20, down in the Peninsula with my esteemed friend and fellow memoirist and fiction writer Lindsey Crittenden. Here's the information from the Notre Dame de Namur University website:

Creative Writers' Series Poetry and Prose Reading, Lindsey Crittenden & Rachel Howard March 20 at 7:30 p.m. Wiegand Gallery

Two well-known local authors, Lindsey Crittenden and Rachel Howard, will read from their published work, discuss work in progress, and share their experiences on the literary scene. A reception will follow the reading.

Lindsey Crittenden is the author of The Water Will Hold You: A Skeptic Learns to Pray and The View From Below, a collection of short stories. Her personal essays and articles have appeared in The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle Magazine, Real Simple, Bon Appetit, Health, and Best American Spiritual Writing.

Rachel Howard is the author of "The Lost Night," a memoir about the emotional aftermath of her father's unsolved murder, acclaimed as "enthralling" by The New York Times. She serves as the freelance dance correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle, and her writing has appeared in the New York Times, San Francisco Magazine, and many other publications.

I read alongside Margo Perin, Robert Mailer Anderson, and Joe Loya as part of Litquake, the jam-packed and very, very fun festival that takes over San Francisco every fall. I led a workshop on "Writing to Overcome Trauma and Grief" at this life-changing conference for people who have lost a loved one to murder. The way the attendees bravely shared their stories was so inspiring that I hope to lead this workshop again someday.

Grotto Works Celebration

I joined fellow SF Writers Grotto members Christopher Cook (Diet for a Dead Planet: Big Business and the Coming Food Crisis), David Ewing Duncan (Masterminds: Genius, DNA, and Quest to Rewrite Life), Kaui Hart Hemmings (House of Thieves), Melanie Gideon (Pucker), Peter Orner (The Second Coming of Mavala Shikongo) Caroline Paul (East Wind, Rain), and Jason Roberts (A Sense of the World: How a Blind Man Became History's Greatest Traveler)--phew!--to mark the release of their books, as well as "The Lost Night's" paperback edition. San Francisco Chronicle Book Review editor Oscar Villalon emceed a sweltering evening (oops, no air conditioning) at which everyone seemed to have a great time.
